The Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 8 to 4 at
Municipal Stadium.

Rico Petrocelli had a big day at the plate. He doubled scoring a run in the
1st inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 1st of the season) in
the 4th inning and tripled in the 7th inning. Cal Koonce(1-0) was helped out
by Sparky Lyle who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 1st save.

Steve Hargan(0-2) was the loser. He gave up 6 hits and 6 walks in 6 innings.

CALIFORNIA AT MILWAUKEE

At County Stadium, the Milwaukee faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel. Clyde Wright(1-0) finally bested his Milwaukee counterpart,
Skip Lockwood(0-1), by the score of 2 to 1.

Milwaukee was unable to claim the lead after California went ahead in the top
of the 3rd inning plating an isolated run. Wright got help from Lloyd Allen
who pitched great and earned his 1st save.

Lockwood was hit with the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 7
innings.

MINNESOTA AT CHICAGO

First baseman Rich Reese had 2 base hits and Tom Hall finished beautifully as
the Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox 7 to 6 at Comiskey
Park.

Minnesota had the winning rally in the top of the 8th inning with 2 runs on 3
hits. After an out was recorded, Danny Thompson began the rally when he drew
a walk. Cesar Tovar next to the plate and he delivered a single. Rod Carew
then laced a one-base hit plating a run. Harmon Killebrew was up next and he
slapped a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago was out-hit
by Minnesota, 15 hits to 7.

The win was credited to Jim Perry(1-1) who went 7 innings allowing 6 runs.
Perry got help from Hall who earned his 1st save. The loss was charged to
Steve Kealey(1-1) in relief. He surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.

'He gutted it out' Bill Rigney said of Perry. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

Bobby Murcer had 3 base hits and 4 RBI and Mel Stottlemyre completed the game
without help from the bullpen at R.F.K. Stadium as the New York Yankees beat
the Washington Senators 11 to 6.

Washington fell behind quickly as the New York offense came through in the
first inning when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was
provided by Murcer who silenced R.F.K. Stadium as he lashed a single plating
two runs. New York finished with 14 hits in the victory.

Stottlemyre(1-0) allowed 6 runs on the game. Jim Shellenback(0-1) was the
losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.

Paul Blair launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Memorial Stadium where the
Baltimore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers 12 to 10.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Blair. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 2nd inning and popped a
two-run clout over the fence (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning.
Detroit was set down quietly in the 9th.

The victory went to Grant Jackson(1-0) who went 3 innings, allowing no runs.
Jackson got relief help from Eddie Watt who gained credit for his 1st save.
Dave Boswell(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.

beat the Oakland A's by the count of 2 to 0.

Kansas City set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run
using 2 hits. That early scoring was all that Dal Canton(1-0) needed.
Kansas City had a total of 7 hits for the game.

Dal Canton got help from Tom Burgmeier who was credited with his 2nd save.
The losing pitcher was Diego Segui(0-1). He allowed 2 runs and 6 hits in 7
innings.
