Third baseman Darrell Evans hit a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Atlanta Braves
man-handled the Los Angeles Dodgers - the final score was 13 to 2.
Evans enjoyed a big day at the plate. He laced a single scoring a run in the
1st inning and belted a three-run homer (his 8th of the season) in the 2nd
inning. Atlanta out-hit Los Angeles for the game, 19 hits to 10.
The win was credited to George Stone(7-4) who went 7 innings allowing 2 runs.
Doyle Alexander(2-1) absorbed the loss. For Atlanta the victory was a
welcome one, indeed. They had been struggling in their last ten games with a
disappointing 2-8 record. With the loss, the Los Angeles ballclub's record
is 54-39.

Smith and the Red Sox Down Yankees
In an exciting ending to today's game at Yankee Stadium, Reggie Smith gunned down Bobby Murcer at the plate to record the final out for a 8-5 Red Sox victory. Smith gave the Bosox the lead in the first inning when he hit a 2 run dinger (his 20th) scoring Luis Aparicio. In the bottom of the first Sonny Siebert had his 25 inning consecutive scoreless streak end when he gave up a lead off double to Horace Clarke and a two out single to Roy White. With the Red Sox leading in the ninth 8-3 the Yankees made it interesting when they had the bases loaded against Ken Brett, who had already walked a run in making it 8-4. The Red Sox then went to their pen and brought in the tough lefty Sparky Lyle who got Danny Cater to pop out. Felipe Alou then laced a single into right scoring Jerry Kenney. Murcer, who was on second, ignored the stop sign from the thirdbase coach as Smith threw a perfect strike to Bob Montgomery to nail Murcer ending the game and giving Boston a 8-5 victory and their second win of this 3-game series.

Rico Petrocelli slammed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston
Red Sox, running on all cylinders, ripped the New York Yankees by a large 17
to 4 margin.
Petrocelli enjoyed a big day at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger in the
3rd inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run
shot (his 18th of the season) in the 7th inning. Boston kept the
scorekeepers busy in the 4th inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 5 hits and
the 7th inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits. The Boston offense
man-handled the New York pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings.
The victory went to Gary Peters(6-9) who went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs.
Peters got help from Bobby Bolin who earned his 2nd save. Mel
Stottlemyre(10-8) was given the loss. He served up 6 gopher balls in 5
innings.
Boston now has a record of 41-38. Even with the loss, New York still has a
nice 8-2 record in recent weeks. They are 46-36 on the season.

Orioles Power Up to Down Tigers
Frank Robinson and Andy Etchebarren each hit homers to ignite a 5 run 3rd inning to propel the Orioles past the Tigers 7-2 today at Tiger Stadium. In the top of the 3rd Belanger led off with a walk then F. Robinson followed with a mammoth shot to center for a 2 run clout. After Brooks Robinson struck out Tiger starter Les Cain issued two walks setting the table for Etchebarren who took a hung 1-2 curveball to left field for a 3 run dinger to put the O's ahead 7-0. That would be all the runs Pat Dobson needed as he cruised to a complete game victory.

fought contest in the 17th inning. Gene Alley singled. Alley was safe at
second on a stolen base. Two outs later Gene Clines came up and he slapped a
one-base hit scoring the run. Pittsburgh banged out 13 on the afternoon.

runs. Dave Giusti recorded his 25th save. Ron Taylor(4-1) was the loser in
relief.
Pittsburgh continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 51-28. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss New York
now has a record of 41-34.

AL Standings
Baltimore still holds the top spot in the AL East but their grasp is slipping. With Boog Powell hitting .123 0 HR 1 RBI and the starters being inconsistent the Orioles lead has dwindle to 2.5 games over the Tigers. Thanks in large part to losing 7 of their last 10 to include being swept in four games by the Red Sox. The Red Sox led by Reggie Smith (.308 9 HR 15 RBI) and the pitching of Ray Culp and Jim Lonborg have won 9 or their last 10 and are 4.5 games back. In the West the A's stayed consistent behind the stellar pitching of Vida Blue who was named the AL player of the Month for the second time this season. Blue went 5-1 with 3 CG 2 ShO and 48 K's. The Brewers are tying to keep pace but now have to worry about the "Red Hot" White Sox who have won 9 of 10 and currently have a 3 game win streak.

Regan Wildness Dooms Cubs
Phil Regan had control problems and couldn't close what was sure to be a Cubs victory over their long time rivals the Cardinals at Busch Staadium. With one out in the 8th and Torre on 3rd and Beauchamp on first Regan came in to face Ted Sizemore to preserve a 6-4 lead. Regan got Sizemore to flyout to center fielder Brock Davis who then gunned down Torre tagging up at third. After the Cubs were sent down in the top half of the 9th Jerry McNertney led off with a single then Regan developed his control problems. He issued free passes to Dal Maxvill and pinch hitter Joe Hague. After Luis Melendez flied out to shallow right field, Regan then issued walks to Matty Alou and Lou Block scoring McNertney and Maxvill. Joe Torre followed with a game winning single scoring Hague for the Cardinal victory.
The starting pitchers were both relieved and dejected. Ken Holtzman pitched a fine game for the Cubs going 7 strong in the no decision. Bob Gibson went 7 1/3 and served up homers to Joe Pepitone and Billy Williams.

Home Run Derby for the A's
Six different Oakland batters hit home runs tonight to include two each from Mike Epstein and Dick Green as the A's pounded the Twins 14-1 at Metropolitan Stadium. Bert Campaneris got it started with a leadoff homer in the first which was all Catfish Hunter needed for run support as he was solid on the mound. By the time the Twins scored their first run the A's had a 4-1 lead. The A's scored in the last three innings to put the game away. With the win and the Brewers being idle, the A's moved into a tie for first.
