Game of the Week

Bando and Vida Give Yankees' the Blue's.

Sal Bando had a 3-run dinger and Vida Blue fanned 10 to lead the Oakland A's to a 7-1 victory over the visiting New York Yankees. The Yankees had a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Mel Stottlemyre gave up a lead off walk to Reggie Jackson and a single to Mike Epstein setting the stage for Bando. He took a 3-1 fastball over the left field fence for his 10th homer of the year. Vida Blue made one mistake all day when he hung an 0-1 curve to Danny Walton who crushed it for a solo home run.

Game of the Week

The Dodgers defeated the Mets today 7-2 behind the outstanding pitching of Don Sutton and the hitting of Duke Sims. The Mets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first on a 2-run dinger by Cleon Jones. That was all Sutton allowed. He shut down the Mets after that striking out 12. Sims had great day at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
The win put the Dodgers into a tie for second with the Reds and 3 1/2 back of the Giants. The loss by the Mets dropped them a game behind the first place Pirates.

Don Sutton mowed down 12 New York batters at Dodger Stadium as the Los Angeles
Dodgers beat the New York Mets by the count of 7 to 2.

Sutton(7-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 5
hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. Los Angeles had 9 hits for the game and New
York had 5.

Nolan Ryan(2-2) was charged with the loss. Gil Hodges was upset after the
game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?',
he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's
printed in the rule book.'

They're not having the kind of season Leo Durocher had anticiapted at the start of the season especially after fininshing 5 games back of the Bucs last season. Pitching has been the main problem for the Cubs this year. They are 2nd to last in the NL with a 4.62 ERA. The "Ace" of the staff, Fergie Jenkins has been struggle all year. Even though he leads the League in strikeouts with 88 he is 3-7 with a 3.95 era and just pick up his first victory two nights ago since winning on April 16th. Offensively the Cubbies haven't been too bad. Led by 2nd basemen Glen Beckert who is 2nd in the league in hitting with a .367 avg.. Billy Williams and Ron Santo are providing the punch leading the Cubs with 8 and 9 dingers apiece and 32/ 23 rbi's respectively.

The Pirates come into the contest with a 27-18 record and 1 game behind the Mets. Winners of 8 of their last 10 the Pirates have put it all together this month. Led by pitchers Luke Walker and Dock Ellis who are 8-0 and 7-0 plus Dave Giusti who has recorded 14 saves so far this season. On offense the Bucs are led by the veterens Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell. Roberto is hitting .342 7 hr 29 rbi. Stargell has 11 homers with 22 rbi's. Pirates have also gotten big production from 1st basemen Bob Robertson who has 10 homers and 35 rbi's.

Today on the mound for the Cubs is Bill Hands, 6-3 with a 3.93 era. For the Pirates is Bob Johnson who is 4-2 with a 3.72 era.

Now for the game.
